Teanne Ewings, a senior for Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy, took the top time at the girls high school cross country state meet held in Cumberland on Saturday.
Ewings finished with a time of 18:38.95 on the 3.1-mile course, 10 seconds faster than both the Class A and Class B girls top finishers. Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy competes in Class C. It took second place, scoring 60 points to Waynflete School’s 57.
Orono High School’s Ben Arsenault took the top place in the Class C boys race, finishing with a time of 16:54.46. In second was Pi Crosby of Waynflete School with a time of 17:05.39. In third, and the second northern Maine finisher in Class C, was Orono’s Owen Beane at 17:19.92. Orono’s Camden Brown and Owen Barrett finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Arsenault led the Orono boys to the Class C championship and the Mount Desert Island girls triumphed in the girls race. It was the first state championship for both teams since 2021.
The other state champs were the Scarborough boys by one point over defending state champ Portland in A; the Freeport boys in B; the Falmouth girls in Class A and the Waynflete of Portland girls in C by three points over Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
In the B girls meet, Amelia Vandongen’s second-place finish paced the MDI girls to a 12-point victory over second-place finisher Freeport. Four more runners in the top 14 in Rebecca Rand (6th), Kulani Granholm (10th), Marlee Cantanese (12th) and Meri Rainford (14th).
Defending six-time state champion Orono only had three runners so it couldn’t compete for a Class C title because teams needed at least five runners to score. Orono’s Clara White and Maya Boyington placed fifth and seventh in their class.
Portland’s Aran Johnson was the individual winner of the boys race in 16:18.84. You can see the full list of results from Saturday’s competition at MileSplit’s Maine Track and Cross Country Meet Results page.
